On a private beach 1 hr drive from the Airport to Montego Bay
This resort is truly beautiful with luxury rooms and an amazing selection of local and international food choices. Make sure you find Antonio at the lobby bar! He is spectacular. We had a drink at his bar every night just to sit with him. The resort is located midway between Montego Bay and Ocho Rios so it is perfectly situated to take advantage of the numerous excursions available. The best part of this trip was meeting Mr. Tyrone Neil who is a licensed driver for the resort. He sits at the desk at the entrance of the hotel. We found him because one of our tours did not show up to take us on our paid for tour. We had booked all our excursions through the tour operator in the lobby. I was very upset and Mr. Tyrone inquired if I needed help. I told him what had happened and he told me he could take us. The resort does not tell you that the hotel has private drivers that will take you on any tour you want for the same price or less. AND it's a private tour! You're not crammed in a van with twenty other people. Mr. Tyrone got us where we were going in his spotless, air conditioned, wheelchair assessable van. He then helped us plan a completely customized excursion for the next day up into the hillside and into several towns and markets, ending for lunch at the world famous Scotchies for authentic jerk chicken and pork. Not only will he customize any type of tour for you, he also will pick you up and return you to your hotel for less than what Amstar charges, and again, it's a private van. We will be returning next June and are going to plan everything ahead of time with Mr. Tyrone via email. Oh. And did I forget to tell you he is a 38 year retired police officer in Jamaica? Every town we went to he was well known, loved and respected. If we wanted him to be with us he was, and if not, he waited for us. We felt so safe with him. He knows everything about the island and is happy to answer any questions. The driving company he works for requires their drivers to wait with their tourist passengers at all times and to return you safely to your resort. I am really looking forward to next year to see more of Jamaica with Mr. Tyrone. I highly recommend him as a private tour guide and driver. And just like any other tour, please remember to tip Mr. Tyrone. Just like all in Jamaica, the local people get paid very, very little and survive off tipping. Book with Mr. Tyrone. He is a kind, funny knowledgeable man. You will not be disappointed and you will be able to see and do anything the regular tours offer plus a whole lot more!
Just got back from one week at the Grand Bahia Principe in Runaway Bay. Everything was great! Jamaica has some of the best food in the Caribbean! We stayed on the Royal side while one of our friends stayed on the Luxury side, and we were happy with our decision because the beach on the regular/royal side is much nicer and cleaner. Every single employee was amazing and very welcoming! We had a lot of fun with Kevin, Kelesha, Oshea, Vanessa and Adrian from the entertainment team. It rained on one of the days but the entertainment team kept us entertained with indoor activities. The food in all the restaurants, the buffet and the snack bar were all great! Servers Andre, Clark and the hostess in the Italian a la carte restaurant were all very accomodating. The food in the French a la carte restaurant was one of our favorite, and our server, Damian, did a great job! Every employee was always helpful, happy and smiley - even the cleaning crew!
We arrived at the hotel and we were greeted very well and taken to an alternative area to get our room keys and register. A very friendly man took our bags to the room. The room was ok, but it was due a bit of a decorate and the spa bath was unusable due to the pump being so noisy. Everything was good until we realised we were near the entertainment village (avoid at all costs). We went to bed early on the first night due to 10 hours travelling, but from the hours of 11pm and 3am the noise was unbelievable when people were leaving the entertainment village. This would have been fine if it only happened for one night, but it happened every night for 11 nights. The entertainment was one of the best I have seen and the restaurants were ok. The themed restaurants are well worth a visit and they are very high quality. The hotel is populated by a lot of Canadians who can be a little noisy and take over the pool etc, but the pool is very big so you can move. When you arrive make sure you get a Jamaican bracelet because you will get hassles several times a day to visit their other resort, but if you have this bracelet they think you have been. The safes are quite expensive, but try it first before hiring a key. Mosquitos are a major issue so make sure you take a lot of repellent
Stayed in room 23413 from 06/4/2017 to 06/11/2017. Pros: Room was lovely, very clean and the view was impeccable! Only had good interactions with the staff. Man made beach was excellent (even saw a sting ray) :). Food was tasty and did not make me crap (except for room serviced pizza...twice). Mini-fridge was always refilled. A la carte's were good..... the steaks were great. Cons: Corridors and buildings were unbearably hot. A/C on but super low. Fans never running. Have to walk far to get anywhere. Middle pool had no railings or stairs to get in or out. Small TV with no channel guide. Phone did not explain how to call another room. Main buffet is very busy and HOT. Wifi only available in the lobby, and super expensive if you want to upgrade to have it in your room ($80 usd for 2 devices for a week). Elevators were slow.
We reserved room with 2 double beds and rolling away bed for a party of 2 adults and 2 kids (11 and 8) but they assigned us to a king bed room and said they can't change room until next morning. We asked for extra rolling away bed so we can temporarily sleep for one night ... and we waited and waited ... almost 2 hours no sign of any. We called again. They apologized and promise it will be done soon. So we waited and waited... Almost another hour. My kids were exhausted they felt to sleep on shared bed with us. So, we called again and again they apologized . . then 10 minutes later they sent a lady to our room for doing our bed ... not bringing any extra bed as requested. This service lady thought she was sent to our room for cleaning our bed.!!!! After hearing our story, this service lady told us to go down to the front desk and explained... so we did and so they apologized again and said: nothing can do, no other room, no more extra bed We asked how can we sleep tonight? The lady at the front desk seems not to care much. So upset! We asked, at least can we have some extra pillows and blanket? That front desk lady replied: let see what we can do .. 10 minutes later they sent another service lady to our room with a mattress... This service lady was nice and she would agree with us: she can't let the kid sleep on the floor. Thus, the daddy slep on the floor and this is what we paid thousands of dollars for??? We will complain with the manager and see what they will do. Will update status
