The Azores Flights
Researching Azores flights can seem overwhelming and complicated at first, as there are airfields on each of the nine islands. That is why we have put together a guide to the many airports and how you can access them.
Joao Paulo II Airport is located on Sao Miguel, the largest Azorean island. It is the busiest of all the island airports and is located approximately 3 kms west of the city of Ponta Delgado. The airport is served by regional air carriers operating flights to the other Azorean islands as well as international scheduled air carriers flying to Europe and North America. The majority of visitors to the Azores will arrive and depart from this airport. The only direct flights to Joao Paulo II Airport are from select European cities. All other flights connect on the European continent first.
Lajes Field is the most unique island airport, located on the island of Terceira. In addition to its passenger terminal, the airport is home to Portuguese Air Force Base Aerea N°4 and Azores Air Zone Command, a United States Air Force detachment. The airport has an important strategic location between Europe and North America. Passenger flights from here are offered to large cities in Portugal, many main tourist areas of Europe and to select North and South American destinations (flights to Portugal and some European cities are direct, whereas the other flights will have a connection).
Santa Maria Airport is located on the island of Santa Maria. Flights to Ponta Delgado and Lisbon are offered from here.
Flores Airport, on the island of Flores, has flight access to Corvo Island, Terceira Island and the cities of Horta and Ponta Delgado.
Horta Airport on the island of Faial, is located less than 10 kms from the city of Horta. Corvo Island, Flores Island, Terceira Island, Ponta Delgado on Sao Miguel and Lisbon can all be accessed from here.
Flores Island, Horta on the island of Faial and the island of Terceira can all be reached from Corvo Airport, on the island of Corvo.
Both Sao Jorge and Pico have very tiny airports as well, but flights are quite limited and usually private.
