When looking for Spain flights you will need to have a general understanding of the country’s geography and which destinations you plan to visit during your vacation. This is because the country’s two largest airports are located approximately 600kms from each other, one in Madrid and one in Barcelona.
Madrid International Airport, more commonly known as Barajas, is located within the city’s limits. It is the country’s largest and busiest airport and in 2009 was ranked as the eleventh busiest airport globally and fourth busiest in Europe. Bajaras is linked to many parts of Madrid with train service to the heart of Madrid running every five minutes from 6 am to 2 am daily. Bus as well as car and taxi hire are readily available. Inside the airport you’ll find over 30 restaurants and bars, some with wireless Internet, more than 100 shops including duty-free shops plus a post office, a multitude of ATMs, two full banks, a playground, meeting facilities, a chapel and nurseries. Madrid International Airport is serviced by scheduled air carriers like Iberia, Air Canada and British Airways and charter airlines such Air Transat and Sunwing Airlines. Regional carriers also operate from here offering flights to all other areas of Spain. In 2008 a high-speed rail line was opened between Madrid and Barcelona, which covers the 600 kms distance in just two hours and thirty minutes, a fantastic savings of time for travellers.
Barcelona-El Prat Airport can be found just 14 kms southwest of the city centre between the city limits of El Prat de Llobregat, Viladecans and Sant Boi. The majority of air traffic at El Prat is for flights within Spain as well as flights to the rest of Europe and to North Africa destinations like Morocco, Tunisia and Algeria. International flights also operate in and out of Barcelona-El Prat. Charter air carriers such as Air Transat and Sunwing Vacations offer flights here, as do scheduled carriers like Air Canada and British Airways.
Bajaras and El-Prat are not the only airports in Spain. Many other cities including Malaga, Seville, Bilbao, Ibiza and Almeria have an airport, but the majority of them strictly offer flights within Europe.
