Ocho Rios was once just a small port town that survived on fishing and banana boats. Today, this town is now a world-renowned vacation destination that relies on tourism and cruise ships for its livelihood. Ocho Rios and the surrounding areas of Discovery Bay and Runaway Bay are lined with resorts and hotels catering to visitors from around the globe. When choosing Ocho Rios for a holiday, the first thing on most peoples minds is hitting the beach. You will not be disappointed. Mallard’s Beach is by far the most popular which also means it is the most crowded. And if you’re looking for fun and excitement too, you’re sure to find it here. The soft white sands of Turtle Beach beckon a less raucous crowd. Although a smaller beach, it is a great choice if you are planning to just relax and work on your tan. If you are looking for a beach where tan lines won’t be a problem, the beach at the Couples Resort is well known for its topless bathers. For a true taste of Jamaican living, Puerto Seco Beach is a favourite with the locals, especially on Sundays when they come to party. Come to experience the sights, sounds and smells of some good Jamaican fun. A couple of other beaches worth noting are James Bond Beach, a favourite of Ian Fleming, and Jamaica Grande’s Beach. Water sports are obviously quite popular so let loose and try your hand at parasailing, snorkelling, jet skiing or just about anything else you want to attempt.
Ocho Rios offers so much more than just beaches. You will find something new to see and do every day of your vacation. A trip to Dunn’s River Falls is definitely a favourite with all visitors. You can climb to the top and slide down the waterfall into refreshing natural pools, spend the day swimming or on the beach, enjoy a lunch and just have fun. On days when the cruise ships are in port, Dunn’s River Falls is extremely busy though. Dolphin Cove is another popular day trip. Surrounded by exotic rainforest, guests have the opportunity to swim with bottlenose dolphins and view other tropical species of marine life. If you like the outdoors and want to do some exploring, visit Green Grotto Caves where you can navigate your way through the 5,003 foot cave and discover stalagmites, stalactites and more. Of course if you are a fan of reggae music you will not want to pass up a chance to visit Nine Mile, the birthplace and final resting place of reggae legend Bob Marley. Be sure to take the guided tour as your tour guide can provide you with fascinating insights and information about Marley’s life. If you are interested in organized sightseeing or active tours, Blue Mountain Tours and Caribic Vacations are two excellent tour companies operating out of Ocho Rios.
No vacation to Ocho Rios would be complete without indulging in some authentic jerk chicken, pork or shrimp. It packs a punch but you have to try it at least once because it is absolutely delicious. If you are looking for good jerk, ask the locals. Everyone has a favourite. Two of the places that consistently get rave reviews from locals and travellers alike are Blueberry Hill and Mackie’s Jerk Centre and Bar. Whatever you go for and whatever you decide to do while you are there, you will not be disappointed with a vacation to Ocho Rios.
Warm, sunny and tropical are the best words to describe the climate of Ocho Rios. The average yearly temperatures range between 26˚C and 30˚C. May to November is typically the rainiest time of year in Ocho Rios when short but heavy showers are frequent. June through November is the official hurricane season although the island is rarely hit by any.
