Negril is not just a vacation destination but an experience. Descriptions such as tropical paradise, care free, hedonistic, funky, exotic and beautiful all come to mind when you experience Negril. Unlike the heavily commercialized tourist areas of Montego Bay and Ocho Rios, Negril has managed to maintain some of its authentic Jamaican charm and atmosphere evident in its tolerant beaches, traditional foods, reggae music and relaxed attitude. Whether you are looking for some well deserved rest and relaxation or lots of partying, Negril truly does have it all.

The natural allure of Negril was discovered during the 1960’s by the hippy generation. The laid back character of the town and the tropical surroundings unaffected by commercialism and major resorts are the features that attracted them to the sleepy village of Negril. Negril is much different today and yet, still the same. The big resort and hotel chains have set up shop and most of the locals work in the tourism industry. But the newcomers have embraced the free spirited culture of the area and have attempted to blend in with the idyllic surroundings rather than overwhelm them. The west end of Negril is much like it was in the 1960’s, with low-key, modest accommodations, local restaurants and bars and true Jamaican flavour. The east end however is where you will find the larger, upscale accommodations, tourist oriented amenities and activities.
Everyone who chooses a Caribbean vacation dreams of the breathtaking, picture perfect beaches that await them. Negril will not disappoint with its vast stretches of soft white sand lined with majestic swaying palms and the warmest, clearest waters you have ever seen. Seven Mile Beach has been the most popular beach in Negril since the 60’s. The beach is now lined with resorts and hotels but remains just as beautiful as it was back then. Just know that topless bathing and nudity are common here. The warm waters are perfect for swimming and the coral reef just off shore offers spectacular snorkelling opportunities. No need to pack a lunch here. The beach is lined with open air bars and restaurants, clubs and resorts and plenty of vendors selling anything you could possibly think of. But the vendors are also the one down side to this beach as they can be a little overwhelming. If you are not interested, be firm but polite and stand your ground. If you are looking for a beach free from relentless vendors, nude bathers and rowdy activity, Long Bay Beach Park is perfect. This is probably the least crowded of all the beaches and perfect for spending the day relaxing. A couple of other beaches you may want to check out are Bloody Bay Beach which is relatively secluded but frequented by nude sunbathers, or Booby Cay, a small but quiet beach.
The waters surrounding Negril offer some of the best dive sites and tropical aquatic life in the entire Caribbean. Some of the most visited dive sites around Negril include The Throne Room, The Sands Reef Club, The Caves and Kingfish Point. No matter which sites you choose you will be able to witness the vibrant colours of schools of tropical fish, an outstanding variety of coral species, sponges and other marine life such as sting rays. If you are looking to rent dive equipment, take a class or book a diving excursion, Negril Scuba Centre is the place to go. For water sports of all kinds Seatec Water Sports has everything you need or want. They offer excursions and tours, banana boat rides, water skiing, jet skiing, snorkel equipment, parasailing and much more. Looking to get away from the beach for a day and do a little exploring? Some of the best places for day trips include the Royal Palm Reserve for wildlife viewing and bird watching, Rhodes Hall Plantation for horseback riding or Mayfield Falls and Mineral Springs where you can enjoy sliding down waterfalls or soaking in natural whirlpools. Booking a guided tour is a smart idea no matter where you choose to visit. Caribic Vacations offers unique and well planned tours to many of Negril’s most popular sights. Come see for yourself why so many people have continued to choose Negril as their favourite vacation destination.
Negril enjoys a tropical climate characterized by warm to hot temperatures and year round sun. The temperatures are fairly consistent throughout the year averaging between 26˚C and 30˚C. May to November is Negril’s wettest time of year when they receive frequent heavy showers. However, like most Caribbean destinations, the rains usually don’t last long. June through November is also hurricane season but Jamaica is rarely hit by them.
