Hawaii’s Big Island Hotels

If you are looking for hotel reservations in Hawaii, the Big Island, you’ll be pleased with the diversity of accommodation choices. Similar to the landscape of the island itself, the lodging selection of the Big Island has something for everyone. Whether you are travelling for romance, adventure, relaxation or family, you’ll find a hotel, resort, inn, bed and breakfast, hostel or vacation rental to suit.

On the Big Island, the major resort areas include the Kohala Coast and Kona area (Historic Kailua Village, Keauhou). The Kohala Coast, also known as South Kohala, is an area of rocky lava fields caused by the eruption of Hualalai volcano centuries ago. Tucked between the rugged lava fields are modern resorts and fine dining establishments. Surprisingly, the Big Island is referred to as the "Golf Capital of Hawaii" and some of the island’s best golf courses including Hualalai Golf Course designed by legend Jack Nicklaus can be found in the Kohala Coast area. Also found in the Kohala Coast region is Hapuna Beach State Park, home to the island’s largest white sand beach. Historic Kailua Village has many shopping, dining and nightlife options for vacationers as well as historic sights such as Hulihee Palace. South Kona is home to calm, clear waters and is ideal for snorkelling, diving and spotting dolphins and honu (Hawaiian green sea turtles). Two memorable experiences here include manta ray boat tours and deep sea fishing.

Hilo and Puna, on the east side of the island, also have a variety of hotels to choose from. Staying in the east will place you near the world-famous Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and give you ample time to fully explore the park. Many charming, more intimate accommodations can be found in Waimea. Located in Upcountry, east of the Kohala coast, Waimea is known as paniolo (Hawaiian cowboy) country. This is a historic area full or rolling, green pastures, and cattle ranches including the Kahua Ranch. Additionally, Waimea is home to one of the State’s most famous chefs, Peter Merriman. A three-time finalist for the prestigious James Beard Awards for Best Chef, his cuisine can be sampled at his restaurant, Merriman’s Restaurant.
