Hawaii’s Big Island Flights
The natural wonders of Hawaii, the Big Island, have peaked your interest and now you need to know about Big Island flights. The youngest of the Hawaiian Islands, and by far the largest, the Big Island has two International airports for travellers to choose from. Kona International Airport is located in the city of Kona in the west of the island, and Hilo International Airport can be found in the city of Hilo in the east of the island.
The Kona International Airport is the primary choice for travellers to Hawaii’s Big Island. The airport is served year-round from Canada by a whole host of Scheduled Air Carriers including American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, United Airlines of course, Air Canada. Flights with Scheduled Air Carriers depart from most major gateways in Canada and will connect through at least one other major city in either the US or Canada. The connecting city/cities depend/s entirely on the airline you are travelling with and which city in Canada you are departing from. Seasonal service, from December to April, is available onboard Canadian Charter Air Carrier WestJet. This service departs from select Canadian gateways and also typically requires a connection. The airport is located in Kalaoa CDP, Hawai’i County and is close to the resorts of the North Kona and South Kohala districts.
Hilo International Airport is not as common of an option for travellers to the Big Island. However, it is still served year-round by a variety of Scheduled Air Carriers from Canada including Air Canada, Delta Air Lines, American Airlines and United Airlines. There is no Charter service from Canada to the Hilo International Airport. The Hilo International Airport serves the districts of Hilo and Puna.
Outside of the Kona International Airport and Hilo International Airport, many travellers choose to arrive and depart at the Honolulu International Airport in Honolulu on Oahu. From there you can then take a small inter-island flight to one of the two International airports on the Big Island.
