Boston is the capital city of the state of Massachusetts and the largest city in New England. But luckily it is easily explored on foot. This city has gone to great lengths to preserve its many historic sites and not only welcomes but encourages visitors to explore them all. A great place to start your historic journey is with a tour of the Freedom Trail. The Freedom Trail includes more than ten of the cities most popular historic sites such as the site of the Boston Massacre and Paul Revere’s House. You can take the 90 minute guided tour or choose to take it at your own pace. Maps and guidebooks are available from a number of visitor centres. The Black Heritage Trail covers nearly 15 sites, all of which are related to the city’s black history. The most important stop on this trail is Beacon Hill which up until the late 19th century was home to a large community of escaped slaves from the southern states. One of Boston’s most well known events was the Boston Tea Party. Take the time to visit the Beaver II, better known as the Boston Tea Party Ship and Museum. Bunker Hill is another place you’ll want to make the time to see. Bunker Hill was the site of one of the Revolutionary War’s most critical battles. It seems there is a piece of history around every corner.
Besides history, Boston is best known for its love of sports and almost religious dedication to the Red Sox. Fenway Park is home to the city’s beloved MLB Boston Red Sox and hosted its first major league game in 1912, making it the oldest stadium in the Major Leagues still in use. Red Sox tickets can be hard to come by but keep trying because it isn’t just a game, it is an experience. The city is also home to the NBA’s Boston Celtics, the NHL Boston Bruins and of course the three- time Super Bowl champs, the New England Patriots, who play just outside the city in Foxborough. The city also plays host to one of the most popular road races in the world, the Boston Marathon, which dates back to 1897. The marathon not only attracts thousands of runners looking to challenge themselves but also nearly a million spectators. The city also hosts a number of festivals throughout the year including a phenomenal St. Patrick’s Day celebration and the annual Boston Harborfest in July. Boston Harborfest is said to be the largest patriotic celebration in the United States. The festivities include more than 200 events from concerts to walking tours to parties. There is always something going on in Boston.
Boston is also home to some fantastic galleries and museums. Historic Harvard University, the oldest in the country, is home to a number of the city’s best art collections and museums. The Harvard Museum of Natural History is an absolute must see. The museum houses three galleries, each dedicated to a different study including Zoological, Mineralogical and Geographical, and Botanical. The Harvard University Art Museums showcase just about every style from Asian to Italian Renaissance to Expressionist. The Museum of Fine Arts is another beautiful gallery, home to works by some of the world’s most famous painters including Monet and Gauguin. The John F. Kennedy Library and Museum is dedicated to the life and presidency of the iconic figure. Boston is truly a world class city that has something to offer everyone.
Boston enjoys a climate much like Toronto with warm, humid summers and frigid, snowy winters. July tends to bring the warmest temperatures with an average daily high of 28˚C. Winters are long and cold with January typically being the coldest month when the average high is only 2˚C and the low is a chilly -6˚C. During the winter, wind chills can make it feel much colder so be sure to bundle up.
