Hawaii is a part of the United States which is almost hard to believe once you see this tropical paradise. Although it is one state, Hawaii encompasses nearly 20 islands. But only six of them are open to tourists. Hawaii, the Big Island, is the largest of all the islands and bares the same name as the entire state. Yes, it can be confusing, hence the nickname ‘Big Island.’ So from now on it will be referred to as such. This Big Island is thought to be the first Hawaiian island discovered by Polynesian explorers nearly 1,500 years ago. Towards the end of the 1700’s the famous Captain Cook arrived, bringing with him an influx of western immigration. Apparently, Cook was very unpopular and was killed by native warriors a short time later. During this time, the island was divided with inhabitants warring against each other as well. King Kamehameha united the people of Big Island as well as the surrounding islands and continued to rule until his death in 1819. King Kamehameha continues to be held in the highest regard. The island maintains many of its significant historical sites which are well worth seeing. Puuhonua O Honaunau National Historic Park has quite an intriguing past. This 180 acre park was once a refuge for criminals and offers visitors a chance to witness ancient temples, sacred burial grounds and petroglyphs. Also worth a visit are Puukohoa Heiau National Historic Site, King Kamehameha State Monument and Shrine, and the site of Captain Cook’s death at Kealakekua Bay.
Of course anyone who travels to Hawaii for vacation is looking for sun and sand. Lucky for you, the Big Island has plenty of both. Hapuna Beach State Recreation Area is home to a stunning beach, one of the best on the island for sure. Soft white sands and calm turquoise waters make this beach perfect for just about everyone whether you plan on relaxing, swimming or playing a game of Frisbee. The rocks just off shore provide ideal conditions for snorkelling and the shallow coves on the north end are a great place for the little ones to play. The only other beach that rivals Hapuna in beauty is Kaunaoa Beach which has been named America’s Best Beach. Generally this is a great place for snorkelling and the nice rolling waves make it a great spot for boogie and body boarding too. If it is surfing you are after, you won’t be disappointed. Pine Trees, Banyans, Hinoli Cove and Kahaluu Beach are great places to surf. For surf tours and lessons, Ocean Eco Tours and Hawaiian Lifeguard Surf Instructors are the definitely the best.
Majestic volcanoes, magnificent star gazing and exotic wilderness adventures are a few of the island’s most spectacular features. Hawaii Volcanoes National Park encompasses more than 370 acres of the most beautiful landscapes you have ever seen including two enormous volcanoes, Muana Loa and Kilauea. It will take days to explore the park in depth but the Thurston Lava Tube, Halemaumau Crater, and Devestation Trail are definitely highlights of this park. Kilauea holds a special place in the hearts of Hawaiians as it is believed to be the home of the volcano goddess Pele. They say that it is Pele who has kept Kilauea in a constant state of eruption for more than 20 years. However, ancient Hawaiians believed that the peak of Mauna Kea was heaven and home to all gods and goddesses. Mauna Kea is not only the tallest mountain in the world but also the greatest place on earth for stargazing. For outstanding guided tours exploring the island’s unique landscapes, try Mauna Kea Summit Adventures, Hawaiian Walkways or Hawaii Forest and Trail. Simply put, the Big Island is a spectacular vacation destination.
The Big Island is blessed with pleasant temperatures year round with the exception of the higher altitudes where it can sometimes drop into the single digits. The Big Island experiences two seasons. December to March is rainy season or winter when temperatures average between 20˚C and 26˚C. The rest of the year constitutes the dry season or summer with average daily temperatures between 24˚C and 30˚C.
