Prague is the capital city of the Czech Republic. Since the 1989 Velvet Revolution, the city of Prague has become the political, cultural and economic heart of the country. The Czech Republic has more than 2,000 well-preserved castles and chateaus and lucky for you, Prague has more than their fair share of them. The city has been given the nicknames ‘The City of a Hundred Spires’ and ‘The Golden City’ and it seems everywhere you turn there is another majestic castle or church, outstanding monument or landmark. The best way to explore ‘The City of a Hundred Spires’ is by foot where most of the old city is designated pedestrian only. So take your time and soak it all in. If you are planning on doing a lot of sightseeing it would be a good idea to purchase a Prague Card which grants entry to over 50 of the city’s top attractions as well as a guide book and coupons for shopping, dining, excursions and more.
Once you arrive in Prague, it really is hard to decide where to start. Many agree the best place to begin your sightseeing journey is at Prague Castle. According to the Guinness World Records, Prague Castle is the largest ancient castle in the world. The original castle was built in the 9th century and has seen its fair share of kings, princes and other rulers who have each left an impression on the ancient castle. The castle is home to the Czech Crown Jewels as well as the beautiful St. Vitus Cathedral and now serves as the seat of the President of the Czech Republic. As for other palaces and castles, Sternberg Palace, Cernin Palace, Schwarzenberg Palace and Archbishop’s Palace are also worth a look. Churches and convents are also very important in the city and of course absolutely beautiful. Bethlehem Chapel is one of Prague’s most significant churches and is said to be the birthplace of the Hussite cause. St. Agnes Convent was erected some time during the 1200’s and is the city’s oldest Gothic structure; definitely worth a visit. Old Town (Stare Mesto), is full of historic treasures like the Astronomical Clock built in the 15th century, the Jan Hus Monument or the Church of Our Lady Before Tyn, a true Gothic creation. You could spend weeks just wandering and exploring the sights, but whatever you do, don’t forget your camera.
Prague also has a number of museums and galleries, most of which are well worth visiting. The Czech National Gallery displays phenomenal art collections from baroque to modern at venues throughout the city including Sternberg Palace and St. George Convent. The Czech National Gallery is also fantastic with natural history, cultural exhibits and more. For history buffs, don’t miss the Museum of Communism in Czechoslovakia. If you are looking for something a little different, you could relax and stroll the Prague Botanical Gardens or visit the city’s Sea World aquarium. Of course you are going to want to bring home a souvenir from this memorable vacation. Venture over to Havelska Market where you will find fresh produce, flowers, handcrafted toys and gifts, ceramics and more. You also get a chance to mix and mingle with locals. For something a little more upscale, head over to Parizska Street for designer brands such as Dior. No matter what you do or where you go, this beautiful city will surely erase any preconceived notions you may have had and will capture a piece of your heart.
The city of Prague is blessed with a climate similar to Canada. Summers tend to be hot, yet enjoyable with temperatures ranging from 23˚C to 29˚C while the winter months are cold and crisp with average temperatures between 0˚C and -11˚C. The best time to visit in during the spring or autumn when temperatures are mild but a light jacket is still a good idea. Just like Canada, the temperatures can be slightly unpredictable.
