Dublin’s old traditions and cultural heritage have merged to offer a unique atmosphere that is bound to leave you in amazement. Travel along one of Ireland’s most famous routes, known as The Ring of Kerry, to experience the incredible scenery. Along the way, take in some amazing views of the cliffs, mountains, lakes and villages. Visit Giants Causeway, a natural formation of volcanic columns in the sea situated off the north coast of Northern Ireland where legend has it the formation was actually built by the legendary giant Fionn MacCool.
An attraction not to be missed is the Dublin Castle. Take a tour through the grounds, which is the epitome of Irish history, travel back in time into a world where Vikings ruled and history began to unfold. Immerse yourself into a collection of old book treasures at Ireland’s oldest university, Trinity College. Here you will find the Book of Kells which dates back to the 8th century and is considered to be one of the world’s oldest books. When you think of the Irish. St. Patrick should come to mind. So a visit to St. Patrick’s Cathedral, which dates back to the 12th century, is a must! If its sports you favor, why not try your luck in a round of golf at one Dublin’s many golf courses or experience a traditional match of hurling, the ancient Gaelic sport. Purchase a Dublin Pass which will be your passport to Dublin, giving you FREE entry into many of the famed attractions.
For the true Irish experience, head on over to Grafton Street where you can shop till you drop and find great designer showcases at Brown Thomas department store and fine jewelry at Weirs. Located at the bottom of Grafton Street is the famed Molly Malone Statue, a legendary historical figure who was commemorated in the song ‘Cockles and Mussels,’ a popular Dublin anthem. At days end gather with some friends at one of the local pubs. But gentlemen, don’t forget your lady as you will be denied entrance if you are on your own. To indulge in some of the best pub food around try the Dover Sole. It’s outstanding! Spend the night in a hilltop castle to experience true luxury. A tip for the wise, flying out from Shannon rather than Dublin is less costly. So come on out and explore the remarkable land better known as the ‘Emerald Isle.’
The Euro is the only currency that is recognised as legal tender in the Republic of Ireland. On occasion shop-staff and hotels may accept sterling (GBP), however, this is not always the case. (For those visiting Northern Ireland, be sure to use the Pound Sterling)
Dublin has a maritime temperate climate, and less rainfall than the rest of the 'emerald isle', although winters are still very soggy and damp and showers are common all year round. The wettest month, December, averages 76mm of rainfall. Summers in Dublin are cool and pleasant, temperatures in July peaking at around 68°F (20°C), the most sunshine being experienced in May and June. Winters, apart from being wet, are mild with the mercury rarely dropping to freezing point.
Dublin has one airport, Dublin Airport. It is located 10km (6 miles) north of Dublin. There are direct flights between Dublin and the UK, Europe, and the USA. A bus service is offered between the airport and the city center/Dublin area. There is no need to book seats in advance, just show up at the bus stop. The buses all depart Dublin Airport from just outside the main arrivals hall. A staff presence is available at the airport should you require assistance finding the correct bus. There is also an Air Coach that services Dublin Airport to the City Centre. Taxi services are provided just outside the arrivals hall at Dublin Airport. Approximate fare to the city centre is €25. However, there are charges for additional passengers / animals, and also if travelling between 8pm and 8am or on Sundays / Public Holidays.
