Acapulco has built itself a reputation as being home to some of the wildest nightlife in the world. It has become a favourite among the American college crowd during Spring Break and is a place you are more likely to find young party-goers than families with children. The main street in Acapulco, ‘The Costera,’ is where you will find most of the major attractions and the best restaurants, bars and clubs. And almost all of them are open until sunrise. Palladium is the most popular club in Acapulco. It generally caters to a younger crowd with pulsating music, large dance floor and a never-ending flow of drinks. If you make it to Palladium, stick around for the ‘Silver Man’ performance complete with Aztec dress and fireworks display. Baby ‘O is another popular club in the city. It plays great dance music including hip hop, house and techno, has five bars and some of the best service around. If you are looking for something a little less gyrating where you can enjoy a few drinks, some good music and a great meal, Acapulco has that too. Carlos and Charlie’s, the Hard Rock Café and Senor Frogs are all tourist favourites.
Looking for a little rest and relaxation after a late night on the town? Acapulco’s beaches are perfect for that and if you are feeling up to it, there are a ton of water sports and activities available as well. Playa Condesa is the most popular beach in the city and is located in the heart of the hotel zone. It is lined with restaurants and hotels and is always full of activity. It is also home to the giant bungee jumping attraction. Playa Puerto Marques is a favourite among the locals and is always very busy. With soft golden sand and calm waters, this beach is perfect for swimming. Playa Diamante and Playa Revolcadero are popular beaches for water sports of all kinds but are particularly well-known for surfing because of their high waves and rough surf.
Believe it or not, there are a lot of other things to do in Acapulco besides party and sleep. Acapulco is full of sights and attractions to discover. The La Quebrada cliff divers are a must see. There are numerous shows throughout the day but the night show lit up by the diver’s torches is particularly enchanting. Take a trip to the Fuerte de San Diego, a fortress that was built in the 18th century to protect the bay against pirates. It provides a glimpse into Acapulco’s history. For a little fun during the day, head over to Parque Papagayo which is an amusement park with carnival rides, go karts, a roller rink and skateboard park. For those who want to shop, there are a few modern malls as well as many open-air markets like Mercado Municipal selling local produce, handcrafts and art. From bungee jumping to all night partying, Acapulco is the place to realize your wildest dreams.
The currency is the Mexican Peso, divided into 100 centavos. All major credit cards are also widely accepted. The US Dollar is widely accepted in tourist areas too. ATMs are a convenient way to obtain local funds.
General Juan Alvarez airport ("ACA") is 25 km from downtown. A taxi ride costs approximately $25 and takes around 30 minutes. The airport is closer to the Playa Marques bay and taxis should be around $10.
